Sometimes there is so much to do, accomplish, take care of …and all you want is free time, peace and space to just be. Here are a few ways handling all that has to be done. One is to Just Do It! Right before writing this blog, I wanted to sit down and write. I also had to do online banking and budgeting. I decided to follow the “do the least tasteful job first philosophy” and just do it. Now I am so glad I did. The bills are paid and I am enjoying sitting here writing and being creative. No procrastination this time.
At other times, I follow the “must be in the flow philosophy” which means if you don’t feel like doing it, don’t do it now. You must be in the mood to do the task at hand. It will take much longer and not be done as well if you are not feeling it. When you are in the flow, things just move along and get done really well while you enjoy what you do. Caution, do not wait too long to get in the flow with something important that must get done.
Then there is my favorite, “Thirty Second Rule” which means just do something that takes 30 seconds and get it over with. Yesterday, my son used a glue stick and left it on the kitchen counter. I explained to him (or nagged-depending who’s point of view you listen to) that it takes 30 seconds to put it away. By doing so you do not have to go back and pick it up and put it away later. Better to put it away while it is still in your hand. Likewise, if possible, do not put down that piece of paper. Handle it, file it or put it on a designated “to do” pile in your office area.
I also use a system I learned from Flylady, (flyday.net,) “You can do anything for 15 minutes.” Just set a timer for 15 minutes and work for that period of time. Then take a break, remembering to always take care of yourself. This is similar to the “Step by Step” way of thinking. Break down a big job into smaller tasks. Just take one step at a time, do one part of the job and be in the moment with that one task.
Lastly, I love the “Buddy System.” Working with a friend or loved one makes an unpleasant job more manageable. Sometimes I will be on the phone with my sister and I will say, “let’s hang up, you make that phone call and send that email and at the same time, I will write out the greeting card and clean off my kitchen counter. Then we will call each other and chat more. Whether the person is working side by side with you or not, knowing you are not alone helps motivate you to “just do it.”
Did you know…
Playing your favorite music while you get things accomplished makes the job more pleasant. I love to listen to music while working in the kitchen or organizing the house. Listening to a podcast or recorded book is another way to motivate you.
When you are in overwhelm, focus on and do just the “one next thing” that is in front of you. For example, if your kitchen is a mess, just do the next thing which may be to empty the dishwasher. Then go on and do the next, “one next thing” which may be wiping off the counter tops.
